A Zero Cost Guide to Setting Up Your Home Studio & Software for Professional Voice Over Recording

Professional voice-over recording requires a high-quality recording setup. However, many people assume that setting up a home studio for voice-over recording requires a lot of money. In this article, we’ll show you how to create a professional-quality home studio for voice-over recording at zero cost.

1. Choosing the Right Room for Recording

When setting up a home studio, the first thing you need to do for a zero cost set up is select a suitable room for recording. A small, enclosed room without windows is ideal, as it will help minimize unwanted noise and echo.

A closet (Cupboard) can work well as a makeshift recording booth, as the clothes can help absorb sound and reduce reverberation. The main objective is not to travel your voice to empty walls and let it get absorbed in either thick blankets, cushions or towels etc.

2. Soundproofing the Room

While soundproofing a room can be expensive, there are some zero cost ways to do it. You can use blankets, pillows, or even cushions to dampen sound. Cover the walls with thick blankets, and place pillows on the floor to reduce noise reflection.

You can also hang a thick blanket over the door to block out sound. What i did was, i made a wall of pillows from three sides, then dropped thick towels on that and then where one side was open, i kept the microphone and recorded, so that my voice can get absorbed from all three sides.

3. Positioning the Microphone

The position of your microphone is critical when recording voice-overs. You should place your microphone on a stand on its own or or fix it on the table permanently like pod casters do and position it at mouth level.

Make sure to keep the microphone at least six inches away from your mouth to prevent popping which means controlling the Phh & Dhh sound and the best way to control that is to use any reasonable pop filters

4. Selecting the Right Microphone

Selecting of microphone plays an important role when we are considering a zero cost home set up, When recording voice-overs, a condenser microphone is ideal, but these can be expensive. A good alternative is a dynamic microphone, which can produce excellent results. You can also use the microphone on your smartphone to get started (Though it’s less advisable if you want to do this professionally). 5. Recording Software

There are several zero cost recording software options available online, such as Audacity and Garage Band (My personal suggestion is Audacity, because even i use that even today). These tools allow you to record and edit your voice-over files easily and they are totally FREE.

There are plenty video’s available on YouTube which explain on how to download and use audacity for free.

6. Acoustic Treatment

Acoustic treatment can improve the sound quality in your recording space by reducing reflection and echo. You can use carpets or rugs to cover the floor, which can help absorb sound. You can also hang a thick curtain over the recording space to help reduce reflection.

Tip: Look for a wall on which there are already thick curtains hanging in the room, in this case you already have one side covered from where the sound will get absorbed and you will have to take care of two sides only where you can place a table and put a thick bed sheet on the table floor, so that the voice wont get a reflection from the table floor too and put pillows on the other two sides.

You can also put a rug or carpet on the floor beneath your chair, which will take the recording quality to next level and pretty close to the studio recording quality and later you can easily remove the background noise in the software as suggested in point number 5.

7. Testing and Adjusting

Once you’ve set up your home studio, it’s time to test and adjust your settings to achieve optimal sound quality. Record a sample voice-over file and listen to it. If the sound quality is not satisfactory, adjust the microphone position and the room’s acoustics until you get the sound you want.

8. Practice and Improvement

Setting up a home studio for professional voice-over recording is just the first step. To become a successful voice-over artist, you need to practice and improve your skills continuously. Record and listen to your voice-over files to identify areas that need improvement.

Conclusion:

Setting up a professional-quality home studio for voice-over recording at zero cost is possible. By selecting the right room for recording, soundproofing it, positioning the microphone correctly, selecting the right microphone, using free recording software, adding acoustic treatment, and testing and adjusting your settings, you can achieve excellent sound quality. Remember to practice and improve your skills continuously to become a successful voice-over artist.
