This article is purely based on my personal experience of using these mikes, when I started in Voice Over industry.
So, as a reader I am considering you as someone who has at least some information about voice over & dubbing, if “NO” then I shall strongly suggest you to go through the following link by understanding this amazing industry and what are those questions one should know before entering into it.
This is one of the most important points which many of us ignore. We learn the skill, we learn the technicalities, and we understand the studio etiquette by taking a formal training in Voice Over& Dubbing.
Neither does the trainer’s mostly talk about it during the training and nor does the student’s are aware of it.
Now! You may ask if all set and done and if we have completed our formal training, then the only thing left is to move our asses and as a new aspirant, we just run to get a break, which is very true.
And the very initial struggle is to find that one place OR let’s say find that one client who says Ok, I shall consider listening to your voice and then the next line or message from him comes is that SEND ME YOUR VOICE SAMPLES OR YOUR WORK LINK
Now this is the time where the voice artist faces the issue, because to send samples, neither do the students have any free recording studios nor they have a home set up where they can immediately rush, record their samples and send it to the client. And sending samples with mobile earphones looks quiet unprofessional and also it definitely won’t be close enough to the sound quality which we record in a studio.
Now the question come’s WHAT TO DO NOW ?
So here comes the first rescue of the millennium 🙂
The Generic 3.5 MM Mike (REASONABLY PRICED)
Why am I suggesting this mike?
Please read the article first and do not worry, you can check this link later, so that you get complete details before you think of buying this mic.
The number one reason for me to suggest you this mike, is because it produces pretty decent quality output which is at least 5 times better, as compared to any earphone recording and you can directly connect this mike into your mobile phone and start recording. It does have a decent wire size (approx. 1 meter), it also comes with a small filter kind off (small sponge looking like thing on the mike) which covers the mike and protects it from dust and air to directly hit on it and also reduces blows (The Phh & Dhh sound)
This mike i will also suggest to people who are fond of singing at home on apps like Smule OR Star Maker. You will definitely love to see the results as compared to singing on earphones, you will come to know once the recording is done and you can see how clearly your voice is been recorded by looking at the sound wave graph.
Few precautions need to be taken while using this mike!!
You will have to look for the most silent zone inside your house OR whether as this ever you are and consider as a condenser mike (which takes background noise from the surrounding); hence it will take the background noise if it is sharp enough. Secondly, you cannot use an external pop filter to control your blows, for example the Phh OR the Dhh sound which means words which throw more air when they are spoken, hence you will have to control it by either keeping your face little cross when these kind of words come OR try a breathing technique if you got trained for it and you know how to do it.
To elaborate little more on this technique, this is mostly taught while taking a formal training in Voice Over & Dubbing.
Now comes the second rescue of the millennium 🙂
The BOYA BY M1 Mike
This mike is quiet popular among the You Tubers (specially the beginners), but I have personally seen quite a few successful you tube professionals too using this mike, if you don’t agree with me you can check tons of review of this mike done on you tube.
Ok! This mike isn’t that cheap as compared to the first one, but still someone who wants a little better quality in voice and someone who wants to play the long game either in voice overs OR You Tube will definitely love this mike.
It also has a long cable which should be around 3 meters in length, which at times makes it little complicated to roll it up, but for you tubers or something which you are shooting from a distance, then it will be like a boon.
Because, you can still sound good even if you are 3 meters away from the camera (Mobile/DSLR), there is just a small setting on the mike which makes it easy to switch on DSLR OR Mobile
